Love of Reading from the Very Beginning

Blooming Prep Parent Resources
Introduction
Reading is one of the most meaningful gifts you can give your child. From infancy, books help build language, communication, imagination, curiosity, and early literacy skills. Even before babies understand words, they benefit from hearing language, seeing pictures, listening to stories, and sharing special moments with caring adults.
1. Model a Love of Reading
Children learn by watching the adults around them. Let your child see you enjoying books, magazines, recipes, or newspapers. Create a cozy reading corner and visit the library together.
2. Read Aloud Every Day
Read daily, even if only for a few minutes. Use expression and enthusiasm, point to pictures, and repeat favorite books often.
3. Engage the Senses
Explore textured and sensory books, allow your child to turn pages, and use different voices for characters to make reading interactive.
4. Follow Your Child’s Interests
Choose books that reflect your child’s interests and allow them to select books during library visits.
5. Encourage Conversation
Ask simple questions, talk about pictures, encourage responses, and celebrate your child’s communication attempts.
