Preparing Your Child for a New Sibling

Welcoming a new baby is an exciting milestone for the entire family. While parents often spend months preparing for a newborn’s arrival, older siblings may also need support as they adjust to this important change. With thoughtful preparation, children can develop confidence, connection, and excitement about their new role.

1. Include Them in the Journey

Invite your child to be part of the pregnancy experience. Share age-appropriate information, look at baby photos together, and encourage them to talk, sing, or read to the baby before birth.

2. Read and Talk About Becoming a Sibling

Books and conversations about welcoming a new baby help children understand what to expect and provide opportunities to discuss their feelings, questions, and emotions.

3. Protect One-on-One Time

Even a few minutes of uninterrupted attention each day can help children feel secure, valued, and connected during this transition.

4. Encourage a Helper Role

Give your child simple responsibilities such as choosing an outfit, helping gather supplies, or singing to the baby. Small contributions help build confidence and a sense of belonging.

5. Maintain Familiar Routines

Consistent routines provide comfort and stability. Keeping familiar schedules whenever possible helps children adjust more smoothly to family changes.

Blooming Prep Parent Tip

A new sibling doesn’t replace a child’s place in the family—it expands it. Reassurance, patience, and meaningful involvement help children build positive relationships with their new baby sibling.
