The Journey to Writing: Understanding Emergent Writing

Blooming Prep Parent Resources
At Blooming Prep, we view writing as a process that begins long before children form letters correctly. Through drawing, storytelling, mark-making, and creative expression, children develop the foundational skills needed for reading and writing.
What Is Emergent Writing?
Emergent writing refers to the early stages of writing development that occur before children are able to write conventionally. These experiences help children understand that marks, symbols, drawings, letters, and words all communicate meaning.
Stages of Emergent Writing
- Drawing and mark-making
- Scribbling
- Letter-like forms
- Letter strings
- Invented spelling
- Words and simple sentences
Ways Families Can Encourage Writing
Create a Writing Space
Provide paper, pencils, markers, crayons, sticky notes, envelopes, journals, and other writing materials that children can access independently.
Encourage Drawing
Drawing is an important step toward writing. Invite children to tell stories about their drawings and describe their ideas.
Model Writing
Allow children to observe you writing lists, notes, messages, recipes, and reminders in everyday life.
Invite Meaningful Writing
Create signs, labels, grocery lists, thank-you notes, cards, and messages together.
Celebrate Effort
Focus on communication, creativity, and confidence rather than perfection or correct spelling.
